This efficient bathroom is in a bright, clean-lined ADU in Santa Cruz, California, constructed by Santa Cruz Green Builders. Its sleek rift-sawn white oak vanity has slab-front doors with minimalist pulls, and its low-curb shower has walls covered in modern-looking vertically stacked rectangular tiles that are softened by a little bit of variation in their glaze. A woven rug with an earthy Southwestern palette and pattern adds warmth and texture, and a skylight washes the room with sunshine.

Emily Elkins of Kendall Design Build and her client embraced a “more is more” approach when renovating this 5-by-8-foot bathroom in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Sage green details in the colorful botanical Schumacher wallpaper inspired the fresh color of the wainscoting, which is a beveled subway tile set in a running bond pattern. Elkins paired those with a simple white 24-inch, ready-made vanity topped with white quartz, then added a brushed gold faucet and handle set with an Art Deco style that complements the home’s 1920s Tudor-style architecture.
